Avgonyma village is located in the west of the island, 16 kilometers from the country.
It is a quiet, before the Medieval village, at a height 462 meters from the sea, with picturesque houses and magnificent view of the Aegean.
The village is very old, probably before the middle ages. Jerome Guistiniani, as many other historians, mentions Avgonyma as a fortified fortress. According to tradition, the village was destroyed by pirates. It’s built up mainly by stone houses, cube-shaped, built into the hillside. They have great view: some face to a pine tree forest and others at the endless ocean.
The most beautiful sunset one can enjoy, he will experienced it here, in our little village.
Many of the old houses have been restored respecting the traditional architecture. The village was almost abandoned in the 60s and that saved it from urban construction. Ruins of the past thirty years have been turned into cozy cottages by locals operating them or using them as retreats, especially in winter. Close to Avgonyma lies the village of Anavatos,- another Medieval village.
Some of the most picturesque and clean beaches are not too far from the village. Elida, Yali, Tigani, Trachili and Long Sand which are all inviting with fresh nice waters!
